Hand-Foot-and Mouth Syndrome

I got called to pick up Logan from school yesterday and quickly rushed him to the doctor. He has this funk.

The day before yesterday I noticed one tiny little blister and after carefully cleaning his hands figured he must have done something and it was ok. I put on some antibiotic ointment and he was fine.

Then today when we pull off his shoes his feet have broken out, along with his hands and fingers. I hope this passes quickly and although it's probably in vain I'll be crossing my fingers my other children don't get it.

We just went through an episode of hand, foot and mouth disease in our family a few weeks ago. The six year old had a fever of 103 F for 2-3 days and then seemed to be OK. The mouth sores seemed minor however the red spots / blisters on the hands and feet resulted in skin sloughing off as new skin grew under it. Now - about 4-6 weeks later all her fingernails are being replaced by new growth. The old nails are nearly falling off and it is somewhat alarming but apparently not rare.

I was sick with it, as an adult for 4-5 days and felt miserable with symptoms of a sore neck from swollen glands. Red spots and blistering type symptoms. However my nails are fine...
I hope this provides some information to other parents.

Thanks for the forum.

Nice photo of the symptom.

I'm so glad to see that my daughter is not the only one to be experiencing these symptoms. It's been almost a month and a half since our little outbreak of HFMD and now it seems new nails are growing, pushing out the old ones. Not very pretty, but I'm feeling reassured. Thanks

Wow...this sickness has been absolutely horrible. My first son had this about three years ago and had a few red spots and a fever. My 8 month old just got it about a month ago and I thought it was much worse for him. He had sores on not only his hands, feet and mouth, but even some on his legs and groin. The pain kept him from taking his bottles or food. Our doctor prescribed ibuprofen for some relief. He is much better! Both kids---no nails fell off! Well about a week after my 8 month old got it, I got it!! And omgosh! I had an apparent over reaction to this sickness. I got the blisters on my hands and feet so excessively that my doctor was not convinced it was HFMD. He said I would have to be living in a bubble to not have already had this as an infant or child. He and other doctors consulted and thought thru every other concievable disease. They asked if we had rats, if I had been traveling, or out of the country. It honestly scared me a little. They mentioned Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and even Parvo virus!! Oh another reason they didn't think that it was HFMD was because I had no sores in my mouth. Have to say that the onset of the sickness was awful. I thought I was getting the flu. My entire body hurt. It was only after the blisters set in did I know for sure what I had. So I'm am currently getting over it. My skin has completely seperated from my heels and toes. It is disgusting! But my hands are looking much better now that it's gone thru the same. Something to note: I did get three mouth sores about 2 wks after the fever onset. Curious? My doctor said I should be getting better...hmmm? I am but maybe I had some kind of relapse??? I just noticed yesterday that it looks as if 2 of my finger nails may fall off. We'll see. I'm hoping they don't!

My son is 6 years old and was diagnosed with having HFMD. I was horrified when I first noticed this disease. He had very few spots one day and the next day it was every where. He had blisters and red spots on his entire body with the exception of his chest and back which where blister and spot free. The doctor told me that these are non-itching blisters which in my sons case wasn't true he was itching horribly. His lips were swollen and he even had the rash on his ears. He was diagnosed with this disease 4 weeks ago today and just this morning we noticed that his fingernails look like they will be coming off as well.

If your child gets this disease the doctor will probably tell you that they will be okay and that there s really no way to treat it. Well, in all reality they are in pain and are very uncomfortable for about a week. They have a hard time eating and drinking and have alot of skin irritation. My advise is to give you child an oatmeal bath twice a day, along with Motrin for fever, and a doctor prescibed itch medication. My son had this disease so severally that the doctor also prescibed antibotics which is not commonly used for HFMD. She said it was the worst case of HFMD she had ever seen.

Hope this post helps !!!

My son and I got HFMD 5 weeks ago. I am 28 years old and I had blisters/sores all over my body. My experience has been horrible. I had sore throat, fever of 102.5, and the sores everywhere. It's week 5 now and my feet are still peeling from the sores, my hands are 95% peeled and no skin. But now my thumb (left and right) and my pointer left fingernails are falling out. This disease is crazy!

My 18month old daughter had the HFMD so bad she refused to eat or drink, her pediatrician said that we could give her a "cocktail" that had Benadryl,Maalox and ambesol. Unfortunately she's allergic to Benadryl. So we gave her yogurt and Ambesol, then gave her straws to drink from. Once she was over that we were in the clear or so we thought. About 4wks after the HFMD her fingernails and toenails began to fall off! I panicked and took her to a dermatologist who said that this can happen from HFMD, but called it Onacoliysis(spelled wrong). They took a biopsy of her nail and will test to make sure there's no yeast, which takes 1mo. Until then they said that her nails can and may continue to fall off for up to 1yr. I am hoping not, cause they are snagging on things. Hope this helped.

I am so happy to have found this site! I just noticed my sons fingernails falling off after the fact of having the HFMD...it is scary to look at and i was freaking out! I am so glad it is a result of this horrible disease and not something new to deal with! I feel bad for all the kids (and adults) that have had and will have to go through this...wish they could find a vaccine for it!!!

This is quite the viral disease to get these days... My son who is 9 had it this past June and Nov. In June he started off feeling tired and his body was hurting, then sore throat and mouth blisters appeared. We went to the doc and he only could prescribe pain relief and the maalox benydril mouth swish and wait it out. They say it's transferred through saliva and even longer through feces(3months or so) Many children get it at daycare setting because they touch everything and then put their hands in their mouth. My son then recently started in again with a headache, body aches and sore throat in mid Nov. a week later on Thanks Giving of course his hands break out in light red spots and has a loss in appetite. The poor guy missed last Thanks Giving dinner to a serious 24hour flu. So now he hates TG and thinks the smell makes him sick! Soon after TG his hands and feet got worse with the spots turning darker red and blistering and pealing for a week or 2. Also he did find his hands to be itchy and I gave him benydril or an anti itch spray or cream to help. It's been a month since our 2nd lapse of HFMD started and his nails are all breaking at the cuticle and comming off. I also noticed his finger nails have had Divots and dents for awhile now and I read that your nails show you signs of health problems. I am assuming the divots and dents and nails now falling off means his ammune system was compromised due to the virus! So name of the game is wash your hands and keep them out of your face and no more sharing cups with friends. Even my boyfriend got it a week or so after my son, he had a sore swollen throat, loss of appetite, and light red rash spots all over his arms and chest for a week or more. So far My 3 month old and I have been clear and super lucky and pray it stays that way! We must have some super powered immune systems because I kissed my boyfriend before I knew he was sick and my baby puts everything in his mouth!
So rest assured you will all recover... Just blow kisses and take your pain relief in the mean time!
