Today I went in for my post-surgery exam. Afterward I hurried over to the mall to see if Trade Secret had gotten some OPI's LE Kris Kringle Makes me Tingle. I was disappointed to find out that they didn't have any and made my way out of the mall, toward the exit.
On my way I saw a asian nail salon. A big sign sat atop a nail rack. "GET YOUR OPI POLISH HERE!" So I shifted Annabel's car seat (she was warmly snuggled inside) on my arm and went in. I was immediately accosted.
"You want manicure?" some young man asked.
"No thank you, can I look at your polish please?"
"You look at polish, ok, let me know if you want to see" and off he goes.
Thank.God.
Let me explain a bit about polish. If you're a junkie like myself there are polishes you'll want so badly but will never own. This is because if stored properly lacquer can have a very very long shelf life. I'm talking 10+ years. So when I hit up a store, I always look for those polishes I've always wanted, hoping to find one amongst the racks, forgotten and needing to be loved.
As finished with the counter and moved to the rack. I gently grabbed each bottle that stood out and flipped it over to check the label. I found one bottle I wanted and sat it on the glass counter. Out of the corner of my eye I see movement so I look up. It's another employee.
"What you want?" she says.
"I'm looking at polish."
.
"You want to buy? what color you look for?" she keeps staring right through me. I get the distinct impression she thinks I'm a thief.
"I'm not sure," I reply and keep looking, trying to ignore her. "I'm looking to see if you might have something I want."
"How many you want? What you look for?"
I stop and look up at her again and repeat my previous response before returning to the task of looking over the bottles. And I'll be damned, the hussy stands over me. I keep waiting, hoping she will back off. I look over at Annabel who is nestled in her car seat directly at my side but when I look back, psycho asian woman is still there.
I finally have had enough and stand. I give her the eat shit and die look before telling her I'll take the one bottle.
"8 dolla," she says and just stares at me. I refrain from asking, "Me love you long time?" and instead reach into my pocket book and pull out the money and hand it to her. Even then she stands staring at me.
"WHAT?" I say rather harshly. And sensing I'm now pissed she saunters off. I grab Annabel and my bottle of polish, somewhat regretting making a purchase from the witch.
So I'm sitting her stewing over this. This isn't the first time this has happened. I don't know what it is about asian nail salons. Every time I've went shopping for rare polishes the same thing happens. They hawk eye me, stand over me or refuse to allow me to look over the polishes for sale. I've even went to salons with polishes locked up and I will have to call out and point to individual bottles in order to inspect them. Then the people become openly annoyed with me and act like I'm wasting their time.
I wish I could speak their language. That way, the next time I go to one of their salons, I can say:
"I'm not a thief, I'm just looking over items you clearly have labeled "FOR SALE". If you don't like it, take down the damned sign! And don't worry, I'm not risking going to jail to steal a bottle of nail polish from you, I'm not an idiot."
I mean seriously, can you see me swiping a few bottles and trying to make it out of the mall while carrying a large infant car seat with a baby inside? Sure it makes a funny mental image but jeezus.
.
**The "Me Love you Long Time" thing was thought in my mind, as a JOKE. I won't be editing anymore posts about this issue, only to say that anything written versus spoken can be taken in the wrong context. If you took me seriously when I said this, then I do apologize for that. In all honesty, it was my sort of potty humor. .

surely you must understand that most of these people do not understand english very well. Not only that but most of them have invested every dime they own into their shops and shoplifters come in every shape, size and color, including those carrying children, what perfect place to hide something than down a diaper or in a diaper bag.
Would you not protect your interests in their position?
Also, in my experience asian people, particularly women are very in your face. I should know, my mother in law is chinese.
Now I'm not trying to make you feel any less justified in your anger or to start a fight but first it was mexicans in walmart and now asian nail salons.
Being both hispanic and with chinese people in my family on my husband's side I must admit to feeling a little, perturbed by the tone of these posts.
As to feeling like a criminal in a store, well I was once kicked out of a pricey boutique with the explanation "I don't think we have anything here for you" Could have been the outfit I was wearing or this very latin face I can't disguise, who knows. Point is, I had the cash to buy something.
Had you spoken whatever language this asian woman spoke she probably could have and would have been more helpful to you.
As my mother says, "speaking, the nations understand each other."
To address the issue of first it was Mexicans and now Asians. I mentioned the Mexicans in my Wal-Mart because honestly, I'd never noticed until that very night. I tried to transcend the language barrier as you said, however, they themselves didn't even seem to know the rudimental english to my rudimental spanish.
In regard to the salon, had the employees spoken my language then perhaps things may or may not have been so tense. However, they are running a store in America where the primary language is English. I would assume for the sake of good business it would be essential for them to understand what a majority of their clientele speak.
I say "Asian Salon" because it is the term used on the forums I frequent on MUA, it wasn't meant as racial in anyway. However in retrospect, as you perhaps do not frequent these forums (and if you do them I stand corrected) I can see perhaps why you see a tone in these posts.
The truth of the matter is, I was treated rudely as a consumer. There was a sign inviting me inside to purchase OPI polish. I went inside to browse the selection and yet I was stood over like I'd committed a crime. I never indicated language was the direct problem for this situation.
And a fast FYI, I stood in very plain sight, with baby and purse on the ground, at my feet, in front of all the employees. Unless I was some houdini there is no way possible I could have placed anything in a diaper or bag. I actually did that on purpose. The polish I initally selected and eventually purchased was placed on the glass counter in plain sight. I also didn't handle more than one product at a time.
If the shop didn't intend to sell them perhaps they could take the sign down. I'd be equally upset if it were an American nail salon that did this. In fact, I didn't blog at the time but once I was told rudely an American Salon "did sell nail polish" and out I went. Had this occurred to me what I had this medium to voice what occurred in a day in my life I'd have written about this too.
In the end, this is my avenue to blog and to be honest, I don't think I've been hateful or rude in any of my reflections in regards to any race or nationality. Being ill treated as a consumer, irregardless of a person race or creed is just plain wrong in my opinion.
Next time I will just stay the course and go to salons that I visit (other asian and american salons) or Trade Secret. Then this won't be an issue. They will not have to watch over me and I won't have to give them my business.
Jaime
Sihaya, surely you must understand that most of these people that make business in this country, SHOULD very well need to understand english. Yeah, they invested every dime to their shops so that they can have customers come in and come back, not be interregated. I find your little tips on how to steal polishes funny, seems like you've had experience, I don't know I could so be wrong. And yeah, asian women may like to get into people's faces, but not when it's your customer. And why are you perturbed about the tones of her posts? She's the customer, I don't care if she was white/black/asian/hispanic, that's no way to treat a customer in the first place.
You being kicked out from a boutique, you have my sympathy, but hell, you just gave her some tips on how to steal with ease so maybe they were right in doing that to ya. You should've asked for the manager if anything. Besides if I were you, I would've just shrugged it off and let them know they'll never have my business nor any of my friends business for that matter. The fact of the matter is, you make it sound like Jaime was in the wrong, what did she do? She did the salon a FAVOR to go inside and try to make a purchase. The business' need the customers, not the other way around, otherwise, business would fall.
P.S. I'm hispanic, I've had my share of clashes with whites/blacks/hispanics (all kinds, even my own nationality)/and asians, there shouldn't be any excuse for rudeness, rudeness is rudeness no matter what nationality you are.
I'm sorry you find my post so insulting. First of all, I was not rude or insulting or making slurs on your honesty as you however have chosen to do to me. I was merely giving you a look at the other side of the coin, devil's advocate if you will. Compared to "me love you long time" my post was very far from offensive.
No, I have never in my life shoplifted, and I really can't say it feels good to be accused of being so.
As to the idea of stealing something in a baby diaper, have you ever read Gone with The Wind? When the soldiers come back through Tara Scarlett O'hara hides the last of her money in a wallet in her sister in laws diaper to save it from them.
I've also worked as a supervisor in a retail store, I've seen many many shoplifters in my day.
As to this being your blog to express your views, you are absolutely right it is. However when you post openly to the public they can and will give you opinions, and unfortunately not always the ones you want to hear.
But, I will be sure to refrain from commenting in the future since I have offended you by giving you a different perspective.
I hope no one makes that mistake again as its not particularly nice to be accused of being a thief, I would think that your experience at the Asian Salons would make you understand how that feels.
By the way, the United States does not have an "Official Language"
Sihaya,
Are you responding to me or to Ant? Because I never said you were a thief, nor that I was insulted by your comment, and I certainly did in no way make any comments on your honesty.
You never said the "me love you long time" was offensive to you. If you had done so I could have explained the context of which I thought it. As I'm sure you are aware, things written down versus said in person can always be misconstrued or misinterpreted.
I said it in my mind as a JOKE. Perhaps not funny to you but I meant it in a funny way. Sort of like when I look at people sporting a mullet and think of Billy Ray Cyrus. Or when I see people in overalls and think of Hee-Haw. I don't mean it in a malicious sort of way, I suppose I have a dark, SNL, sort of humor.
As for reading Gone With the Wind. No I haven't read it. I'm more of a Poe or Steinbeck fan myself. But I never considered someone shoving something into a childs diaper to steal. Never crossed my mind honestly.
As for people posting opinions. I have no problem with that either. People are welcome to come here and comment away. If they weren't I'd have my comments set to approval first. I merely stated if my blog upsets you or gives you cause for concern perhaps you might not consider reading it. Your choice.
I will say that I am a bit confused by by your comment if it is directed at me. I don't appreciate words being placed into my mouth. Please look back at my entries. I assure you, I in no way said or wrote any of the things you're accusing me of. (With the exception of the "me love you long time" which I explained was out of context.)
I also never said the US had an official language. You are again placing words into my mouth. What I said what perhaps if you're going to work in a business where the majority of your clientele speaks English, then perhaps you should understand the language.
I think this is a situation that, unless I apologize profusely and agree, won't have a happy ending. That is just a guess however and I've always admitted if I'm wrong, so please feel free to correct me if so.
I apologize for not being clear.
My post was actually a response to both comments I found in my inbox this morning.
One from you and one from someone else. For the sake of brevity I responded to both together.
I'm not asking for an apology, you are welcome to feel however you want. I was merely giving my opinion and view point on what I read. (and yes, I know that a lot of people find that "love you long time" thing funny but after spending a lot of time with a lot of people with many different accents from around the world, I don't really find making fun of the way people say things funny. and yes, I know its from the movie fullmetal jacket. Again, that's just personal opinion.)
I however felt I needed to defend my self from being accused by someone (whom you have pointed out was named "ant" of being a thief.
If I explain how to kill someone in say...the game Manhunt, does that mean I've actually gone out and murdered a few people?
I'm seriously not trying to start an argument, especially not to day of all days, its supposed to be a day of family, friendship and thanks (that's a topic for another day. You posted your views, experiences and opinions. I gave my views, experiences and opinions. It should have ended there but instead I was told I was probably a thief and that's probably why I was once treated badly at a store. So, I felt the need to defend myself.
So, lets leave it at opinions differ. I don't like races being made fun of, I'm over sensitive, have a chip on my shoulder and I have never shoplifted in my life.
I'll agree to move along as you have. I just wanted to add.
I'm not picking on races, it was a joke. Kind of like I assumed the comment you made on my Hell-Mart Invasion, Mexicana Style:
"It's the exact opposite here, I wonder how many toothless rednecks live in this country" was a joke also.
However, I'll admit, I allow alot to roll off my back after the inital "grrrr". I don't have a chip of any kind on my shoulders. Perhaps if so I could better understand your point of view.
In any event, all my best to you. I agree this should end here. Especially on today of all days.
Jaime, I've been a lurker of your blog for some time, I hope that my first comment on your blog didn't offend you, it was not my intention to do so. As for the person who should have addressed me personally, she openely admits on having a chip on her shoulder, anything you say or do is going to fall on deaf ears anyway, so it's not worth it, All I'll say is this, don't go onto other people if you already have a chip on your shoulder, check yourself first before you embarass yourself and look like a hypocrite. Not once did I see any "racial comment" on Jaime's post, but I guess if I myself had a chip, I'd probably fall for it too, which to say the least would've been my own fault in the first place for making assumptions. With that, I'll say to everyone have a happy thanksgiving! ^^
I haven't read all the comments to this, just a bit of the first one...and I'm way late in reading this post, so much going on lately! But I just have to say...I don't find your posts offensive at all. I'm Native American, my stepmom(and therefore my half siblings including my little sister) are mexican...my uncle and cousins are black(we call my cousin Bi-Racial Rachel--she calls herself this even--it sounds like a superhero name when you say it like we do LOL). My best friend's mother is Chinese, and she grew up in the Phillipenes. There's really not a race my family doesn't cover. People don't like to admit that some of the stereotypes about different races are, in fact true. Which drives me nuts. I have posted in the past about all the Mexicans in Walmart, and how my sister gripes about all the Mexicans hitting on her etc... I think maybe people are a bit too sensitive? Without delving into the whole "race" issue too much, I just feel the need to say "LET IT GO PEOPLE!"
For the record, I have nothing against any of the races(I mean look at my family, come on), and I still completely got the humor in your "me love you long time" joke.
Some people are just overly sensitive...
Ok, moving on...I would love to have your polish obsession. It sounds so fun! But I can't stand polish on my finger nails. I pick it off almost immediately (I can see you gasping! LOL). You have beautiful nails though!
Ooooh I forgot to add...my mom used to work at Dillard's and unfortunately very high class or normal looking people steal ALL.THE.TIME. And one that really bugs me...people bring in babies in their infant seat like you did, and they hide things under the baby. Come on people, seriously? But yea that happens.
I've been stared down in stores before, even when I was with my mom. And we've never stolen a thing in our lives. When that happened, we just made a comment about the rude workers and left.
Hi Erin!
I just saw that you commented and am very relieved you didn't take offense. It truly wasn't intended in that way.
After thinking it over I'm sure there are people that would shoplift with a child with them. I once saw a Mom being escorted out of Wal-Mart with her toddler by the police so I know it happens.
I suppose sometimes you don't sound as funny typing something as it does in your head if you know what I mean lol!
From your writing, you sound racist and messed up. The reason the employee was rude was because she can smell a racist rat in the store.
okay seriously people...we have quite a few asian nail salons in or area and quite frankly i would never nor would anyone i know go to one for anything as they have been proven to use contaminated product and have signs posted because the government health agencis make them stating thaat you run the risk of contracting hepatitis a b and c as well as many other bacterial and fungal diseases due to unsantitary equipment. They clean up their act for a bit and then fall by the wayside again when no one seems to be looking over their shoulders....call me crazy but i don't think a set of nails is worth risking your health so when i go to get my nails done i make sure its from a place that understands english, uses proper sanitation and i come away happy and relaxed...i am not trying to be racist but when coming to the u.s. or canada a working knowledge of the english language should be a requirement, its not as though they have to pay for the schooling to learn it.
I only go to one salon now, and it is run by white women. They have more than a mediocre grasp of the English language. They also do not rudely chatter in some language the majority of their customers cannot understand. Yes I said that was rude! I once went to a Chinese restaurant with a friend in the Navy, and she told me that the waitresses were laughing about the "stupid whites trying to eat with chopsticks".
She waited until the end of the meal and set them straight in their own native tongue, and they earned every bit of it! Many oriental (Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, etc...) salons are filled with rude, "fake" employees, and it bugs me A LOT! Telling me they love me? Please! They love tips... Wake up and smell the tired marketing people! And many of the women that work in these salons say many of the same things, no matter where you go, they're almost as bad as chat room bots! I might pay more for a white woman to do my hair and nails, but everything about it is better. The service, the atmosphere, the end result.
I won't apologize for preferring my manicurist being capable of doing a design more complex than a 6 dot flower that any teen girl could do. And no, I am not an anonymous coward (ever notice that the people that like to talk trash behind the safety of a computer screen are too scared to identify themselves the majority of the time?)
Asians are like that; my parents included. They don't trust ANY foreigners. I'm sorry your experience sucked, but think of this next time:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SsWrY77o77o
Vietnamese.
trust me. Asians are like this.
most probably dont even realize that they're acting in a rude way. If they were born in and raised in a different country, they probably have different cultural backgrounds, etc. Dont take it peersonally. Being the daughter of an Asian manicurist, i have some experience. But not all Asian nail salons are like this.
I've been trying to find a salon with American ppl working there. I do like this one lady in this nail salon I go into, The other day she said "Oohh I so tired, headache, too much drinking" hahaha. She went on telling me about this huge party that her best friend had, she said I should join her one time, now mind you im 19 years old. lol. She cracked me up. But some of them are very rude, I really need to learn their language and so I can hear what they are really saying about me. lol. It bothers me that ppl come to America and dont learn full English... No offense to them but it just is a pet peeve of mine. It would be like us going to their country speaking some English to them & assuming that they know English... Hope that wasn't rude but its seriously true. Im not racist at all.
HEY, MOM ALL AROUND THE CLOCK! YOU'RE FAMOUS! SOMEBODY WROTE A WHOLE CHAPTER IN A BOOK ABOUT YOU AND THIS BLOG POST! I'm reading it for my college class. I want you to know that this blog post is now famous for being the picture of white racist interactions with Asian nail salons. The book is called "The Managed Hand," by Miliann Kang. You're in chapter six.
KUNG-FU KICK FROM THE YELLOW PERIL, SUCKAAAAAA! http://youtu.be/XhIz8_-XbzQ
I think it's fascinating that all of these people are complaining about the lack of English being spoken in the United States but neglect to capitalize English.
On another note, Mom Around the Clock, you're not very intelligent, and I fear you represent a large part of the American population shopping at Wal-Mart, collecting nail polish, toting too many kids around.
This is your blog, and I would defend your right to freedom of speech. I want you to blog away.
I've throughly enjoyed reading several of your posts, as you make my own, small, pathetic life look quite nice. Thanks for the pick me up. Good luck at the mall and with the minivan.
I agree totally with the comments against Asian Nail Salon Rudeness. We have them popping up here like mushrooms in Australia. Not only are they rude, but they talk about you disparagingly in their own language which they KNOW you can never have a hope in hell of understanding - until I took my Vietnamese girlfrient along to check it out. I have since vowed never to go back - rather, I will patronise the good old-fashioned Salons where you can actually have a conversation in ENGLISH, talk about day-to-day affairs, have a laugh about the economy and hopeless politicians, and of course the famously unpredictable weather in Australia. Point is: you are in an English speaking country. English IS the official language in Australia (and I would have imagined the US until some Politicially Correct person pointed out wasn't the case) and if I am paying you for a service, then I hope like hell you understand what I want - simply following a template and then adding $6 or $8 for little extras is just not the way to go.
I couldn't agree with you more. I'm not trying to stereotype against all asians, because surely, there not all rude. Yesterday I had a horrible encounter at an asian nail salon. I was sitting there getting a manicure, and the lady doing my nails was soooo rude! She was yanking my hand around and giving me really mean facial expressions. She kept insulting me saying I had baby finger nails and that I am cutting them too short. Then, I look over and I see about 3 or 4 asian employees having their lunch break. Pretty much having a feast on one of the work stations in front of all of their customers. You'd think they could go in a secluded room and take their lunch break. They were loud and obnoxious. One of the girls was staring at me and talking, quite loudly, to one of her friends about me. She was pointing and laughing. I was really embaressed. Then, the same girl came over and just hovered staring at my nails. The place was really unorganized. I went over to another station to get my gel nails painted. I got yelled at then, because I went to the wrong station I guess. It was just an overall horrible experience. My nails did turn out good, but from the service, I won't be returning there.

They stare at you because you're an ugly, racist cunt.
I went to a nail salon, operated by Asians, of course. BeforeI go any further, I will preface this by mentioning that I have Asian relatives, and I love them dearly. I went this salon for my very first pedicure. I have heard that pedicures/manicures are supposed to be a pleasant and relaxing experience. As I entered the store, a man yelled for me to, "SIT OVER THERE!" I failed to know that I was supposed to pick a color for my nails at the front of the store before I was ordered to my seat. I could barely understand him when he asked what color I wanted. "Wha colah?" I had no idea what he wanted He was very impatient when I politely asked, "Excuse me?" WHAA COLAH! He huffed and pointed at the nail polish. Finally, I understood what he was getting at. He was very rough with my feet; yanking my feet up on a stool, pushing my cuticles so far down, that I bled. This wasn't what I would call, "relaxing." He applies the polish and points to a corner of the room where the nail dryers were. "Go there now," he says. As I walked/ hobbled with gauze between my toes, I tripped over several extension cords, and scuffed my wet nails. The guy was visibly pissed. He said, YOU MESS UP. I HAVE TO FIX. Like, it was all my fault. He fixed the smudges, but was acting like it was the end of the world. I never felt more unwelcome and tense at a place where people are supposed to relax and chill. I got a huge headache from trying to do the "right" thing, so that I wouldn't piss him off even more. Maybe I got the headache from the overwhelming fumes. No wonder all of the nail technicians wore surgical masks. Maybe, that's why i could understand a damn word coming out of his mouth, or maybe it's because he couldn't speak English. Either way, the pedicure sucked. I never went back. Today, I decided to seek out a salon with friendly, customer-service-oriented, non-Asian grumps. It was the best decision. I could actually understand what the nail technician wanted, and was even able to relax. I will gladly pay double the price to not get yelled at and bossed around.
you are a racist cunt.
A day late and a dollar short but I want to say that you have so much courage to do a blog and leave it open to public comment. I happen to agree with everything you said and "got" the intended humor. Its way more important to be politically correct than to stand up for ourselves and demand the service we paid for. We did not pay for rude behavior and did not ask that it be included as an add on for an extra $8. We (americans) are the stupid ones and no wonder they laugh at us. We let them treat us that way and pay them for the pleasue of it. We are offended and attack someone who dares stand up for themselves and state the obvious. I hope you continue to speak your mind and call it like it is.
PS.I found this blog by googling how to find a non asian nail salon. :-)
I do accept as true with all the ideas you have presented on
your post. They're very convincing and can definitely work. Still, the posts are too quick for newbies. May just you please lengthen them a bit from next time? Thank you for the post.
Take a look at my blog - Full Article
Ok so Jaime, i understand what you are talking about. I run a nail salon with my mother. (note* I am proud CHINESE AMERICAN)
I tell my mom all time to chill out with that shit. But of course she's boss lady and i need to pay bills so i keep my peace. Its just communication barrier that's all. We do have ppl steal from us and walk out not pay for their services play us because they think we some dumbass "foreigners".
We don't like it when people act like we can't understand English... Well at least i don't. I can only speak for MYSELF. (my logo "Keep calm I speak English lol")
To be honest we all have our own mind of thinking but you right if they have a sign that says "for sale" than its for sale. It just sucks for the Asians that do speak english and understand just fine take the rudeness of people. But its ok, i got a voice and opinions bout things so i will voice them just like you did :-) i ain't scarred. Lol
Please...you are so annoying person...these people come to our country and typically are illegally putting techs in their stores. thank this lady here for calling them out. I just got cut at one of these places and am sick that they don't understand English.
Please...this person is so irritating..thank this woman for pointing out that Asian salons...that's right...I said it are below the standards in cleanliness and also they do not communicate well to their customers. I just got cut again and only one person in the Asian salon even could understand me!! I am so tired of these liberal loving people who are unwilling to say to people living in our country, speak English please...
Girl, do not apologize...these people are getting on you for making an observation. You aren't racist for saying that...
Asian mani/pedi cult:::dirt, unsanitary, dangerous.... Just few days ago I decided to do shellac... ?just recently I closed my nai/ pedicure salon on busy Montreal(Canada) street...? Why... it's just a raw difference in prices... So, I am not a" person from the street".. I know what should be what, here I mean sanitation, sterilization.. all that "jazz" that makes us, women",careful not to get infected in spa's etc...
So my hands(fingers ) go into tray full of acetone!!!!) ...good, good, says the tech to get the old stuff off my nails...Curious I went on, what's coming next..... OK... "... nails square, round?" seems these are the only words in English... Round..... FRom the garb pocket (!) out comes a wide, dirty looking nail file.....what color? Cannot tell.... Dirty..
Table top ... no cover, no towel, no paper... nothing... Finished she brushes off the table top by hand...and on it all goes on her clothes.... "It's not good that You are doing it like that" say I... "It's Ok, later wash;;;"
Customers like it(as it SHOULD BE) all tools be taken out of sealed plastic(sterilized) etc.....What happens with cutters, scissors etc after these go for the next customer?? Do these people know what pressure sterilization, UV sterilization, mean?
If You go into one of these "joints" , be prepared for some "surprises" in form of nail fungus...
Now I know why Americans are hated and treated poorly in other countries. Asians are very submissive in their culture, what she thought was being there to be prompt and assist you you implied ignorantly as being watched. Never shop in Mexico, they follow you around while you shop because they think as an American you are used to being catered to hand and foot so they are there to serve you and carry your stuff, assist you, and be at your beckoning call because that is how they think service in America is.
Oh wait, you boast being a redneck...sums up your ignorance! Please don't breed!!
I am irritated in Asian nail salons. The desperate way some of them try to sell little bs tedious services is sickening. They always resort to passive aggressive pressure to bug you for extra money. Dont get me wrong, some of them do a good job. But they act phony as hell and ask too many damn invasive questions. I could care less about being friendly in those salons. I just want the services I came for not every freaking thing in the place.
This is perfect blog for anyone who is looking for topics like this. It has got it all, information, benefits and overview. A perfect piece of writing. Good job.
Funny thing about English is there is a correct way to write it as well as speak it. Anonymous, your post doesn't show your English skills to be top notch. Unless you know someone is here illegally, it is not the best assumption to make.
There are good and rude people of all races. We really can't generalize.
What a WASP problem. You may not think you have been directly rude or racist, but just posting this rant shows otherwise. "Me love you long time?" saying something like that online and then claiming to not be racist is a bit contradictory, don't you think? It's cavalier racism.
*Warning - this will not be politically correct (life isn't) - but it will be the truth. Had to Google this topic after another rude incident in an Asian run salon. I figured others had to have experienced this and I am right. I have to pay more, but I go to non-Asian run salons now. Yes, this can happen anywhere, but seems to happen way too much at these salons. There is definitely a cultural issue here. If you are going to have a business learn the language and the culture ... Oh and yes, learn what good customer service skills look like. Just tired of spending my green (including good tips) and being treated poorly. And as long as people put up with it and line up for it, it will continue. It will go on as long as the owners know there are 10 more people waiting to get their nails done, if you don't come back. So theres no incentive for change. I don't care who is doing it, if these salons were being run by aliens and I was being treated rudely, I would not spend my money there. At the end of the day, it's a green thing.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! You eloquently make a point MANY of us have experienced and want to express. Do you know how I found this blog? Doing a Google search for"non Asian owned nail salons". I don't want to hassle anymore with them not understanding me and me not understanding them. Frankly as many others have pointed out, they are in a country where we speak primarily English. You set up a business you need to speak the language of the the country you're in. Which is English, English, English, English. It's more than frustrating when you're treated so rudely which is been my experience every single time I've visited any Asian own salon, especially the Vietnamese. Hey it is what it is. Even years after the initial posting here, it's still an issue and people are still replying. All I can say is get some manners or I will not return to your place of business.
How do you look like you cant even season your chicken but suddenly you know everything about customer service and think everyone should learn english? stop being ridiculous.
Now to the other comments about the language barrier, again no hate just being helpful and educating you so take some deep breaths if you made it this far and don't be so defensive. As you may know the internet is vast and expansive, if you want to communicate with people who don't speak the same language as you then learn the language, even though it's hard. BUT also don't assume that just because a person “looks asian” doesn't mean that they speak another language, so don't ask and don't just go up to someone and speak that language. Because it would be super weird if a random person came up to you and started speaking to you in dutch they learned off the internet, lol.
BUT in addition, and again still yourself, what I'm about to say may seem off the walls to you. . . but just because people are in canada the united states, or the uk does not mean they need to speak english. I'm running out of energy to type this but no they do not have to speak english. Seems like the people in this store spoke english pretty fine to you though maybe you just had a hard time understanding them. Also I know you would never put the time and energy to study one of the many languages in asia, and even less speak it fluently. Ever vacation anywhere where they spoke another language or want to go anywhere with another language? Well maybe put your energy into learning the complexities and beauty of their language before googling “do they speak english in _____ country?” Ever consider that people dont come to a country for you and how long and hard it is to learn a language.
But im super dome with my little education session.
Please do you research and that a joke is more about the impact, rather than your intention.
Also it wasn't even funny, lol
But don't get mad at me, im just trying to educate you,
Please say thanks ; )
Not trying to be rude here, so white ladyes don't get offended now, but putting on the internet that you were thinking in a "joke" "Me Love you Long Time '' is really not funny. You know what that means right like ever hear a joke towards you and everyone laughed but did not like it. Like if someone says something about how your haircut looks messed up, or if you trip and fall and everyone laughs, it's kind of hurtful to you. Now couple that with violence towards asian women because of that stereotype, and that becomes a super unfunny joke, no matter how much you and your little friends laugh. You know, but don't get upset. I'm just trying to be nice and educate you on the matter because I know some people who are fighting words. And I know if white people can't even handle a little spice then you cannot defend yourself. (Its a joke. . . do you see how it feels now?)
So here goes a short history lesson. That phrase "me love you long time" was spoken in a movie portraying a Vietnamese sex worker soliciting American GIs. If you did not already know most countries in Asia were violently colonized by a european country or the us or canada. Some countries include Vietnam, Korea, India, Afghanistan, Laos, Indonesia, ect. This colonization included sexual violence, fettishizing, murder, erasure of culutre and more. Many women from these countries often were forced or prostituted them selves to survive. This led to fettishizing of aisan women, who in these countries and in the countries they fled to often face this stereotype of asian women, which has led to killing and assault. The stereotype is that asian women are submissive and will love their abusers and colonizers no matter what, and will do whatever you want. Not trying to say all this to make you feel bad just to help you know. While you may not have known the history of this phrase before now you do, so don't think it. Don't believe me, look up european colonization of asia.
Please just delete this post, its super harmful and the people in the comments are making it fester and worse, this is why white people shoot up asian nail salons. Also in context, even without the racism, that joke was not funny. As someone who loves comedy Im just here to give you a little advice, your haircut looks funnier than this, this ugly html blog looks funnier than this. LOL its just a joke, your poorly edited logo at the top of this blog looks funnier than that joke (see how it feels?). But that phrase had nothing to do with the situation. get some better jokes because you could never make it in stand up. And anyone whos laughing at that joke is either out of pitty that your so unfunny or they are just as messed up as you! xoxo thanks in advanced for taking down the blog post.
For those in the comments if you can't even do you own nails, and definitely refuse to speak anything other than English why are you complaining?! You are the weird tourists who touch people in other countries and call them exotic. And yes, in general no one likes being called exotic. ALSO (I can tell you are getting defensive right now but don't, just hear me out) if you are white, you cannot dictate what is racist or not. Why may you ask? because you do not and will never have the experiences of a person of color or a minority. that's just like telling someone who has internal brain damage that they're not in pain because you can't see it. If someone tells you, that you did something/said something racist just apologize and then google what you did wrong and don't do it again. Keep learning because I know you can. be just as passionate about other people's lives and feelings as you are with your nail polish. If you can remember what brands the best for polish, then you can remember not to say slurs or play into stereotypes. Not saying sorry is like punching someone's face and then refusing to say sorry because you did not think you hurt them. please delete this post its doing more harm than good.
